Starting April 1, 2018, wheeled totes will replace the orange garbage bags for collection in Charles City. There will be three sizes of garbage totes to choose from: 35 gallon, 65 gallon and 95 gallon. Current recycling bins will also be changing to a blue 65 gallon wheeled blue tote and this will be picked up every other week while garbage will remain on a weekly pickup schedule. Monthly prices will be $12 for 35 gallon, $15 for the 65 gallon and $18 for the 95 gallon. Garbage in the totes must be bagged but you can use standard garbage bags. If you would happen to have excess garbage one week, you can use the current orange bags to set the extra out next to your wheeled tote. We do request that you refrain from doing that too often. We are also asking that you place totes curbside no more than 24 hours before pickup and that you leave at least 4 feet between totes at the curb or at opposite sides of your driveway. The totes will be provided to you at no cost and sizes can be exchanged no more than twice a year. Current pickup schedule is expected to remain the same. Be looking for a postcard to come in the mail soon from the city asking you to choose which size of tote you want and you have three ways to respond: by dropping off the filled out card at city hall or in the drop box, calling city hall with your choice or clicking on "Contact Charles City" tab on the homepage and directing a comment to "Utility Billing" with your garbage tote size. We would like you to respond back by December 1 so preparations can be made for this change by April. If we do not hear back from someone, we will default to the 65 gallon size tote for them. If you have any questions on this change, please don't hesitate to call city hall at 641-257-6300. Thank you for your help in getting this service up and running!
